The Lady of Avenel is a classic 102-foot brigantine square-rigged tall ship. Originally built in 1874 in Falmouth, Cornwall, she spent her early decades in the granite and saltfish trade. Today, she operates as an adventure sailing and charter vessel offering expeditions around the UK and Ireland. The original vessel has a rich and varied history with multiple refits and name changes over the last century. The Original 1874 Vessel- Construction: Built by H.S. Trethowan in Falmouth as a wooden, 163-ton brigantine.
- Early Trade: She spent nearly five decades hauling granite from Cornwall to various ports around the world.
- Training Ship: In the 1920s, she was purchased by retired windjammer captain Wilfred Dowman to serve as a training ship.
- Arctic Exploration: Renamed the Island (and later Virgo), she was used for British Arctic expeditions.
- Fate: In 1934, Frederick Jackson refurbished the ship and restored her original name, Lady of Avenel. However, by 1939, new owner Jack Hughes left her partially scuttled in Poole Harbour while serving in the Navy. Considered a hazard, the harbour authorities towed her out into open water and burned her.
- Construction: She was built as a motorized vessel in Poland in 1969.
- Conversion: In 1991, she underwent an extensive conversion to be refitted into a traditional sailing ship.
- Modern Operations: Today, she serves as a passenger tall ship offering 12 guest berths. She takes guests on adventure trips featuring sea kayaking, mountain walking, and wildlife watching.
